July 15, 2009 Tronoh, Perak  (by Gerald K).  I woke up at 3.00am and decided to do my emails. Then I started packing for the trip. A few minutes after I loaded my kayak onto my pickup, Mah (Yoon Loong) arrived at my house. Mah said it was raining when he left his house in PJ but had stopped shortly after. Mothership Calling All Kayak Fishers

June 25, 2009 – Minyak Beku, Batu Pahat (by Gerald Khoo).  A call came in mid last week from a customer in Batu Pahat inviting me to go on board his boat for kayak fishing. My initial thought was…Batu Pahat? It is so far away from KL.

Ng Chin Lan, as he is known, had bought a Malibu Pro Explorer from me just a couple of weeks earlier, started harping on kayak fishing at shipwrecks, artificial reefs , mangroves and oyster bars. Shipwrecks? Artificial reefs? He caught my attention immediately. Suddenly, I forgot about how far Batu Pahat was from KL and agreed to join him.

Prawn Jigging at Kuala Rompin

Dubbed as “Bandar Udang Galah” or Giant Prawn Town, relatively unexplored Kuala Rompin is a haven for king prawn fishing. From November to February, high numbers of giant river prawns or udang galah spawn move down the river. Spawning begins when the dry spell hits after the monsoon floods. In the murky depths of the winding Rompin river lurks the “lam kong”, blue pincers in Hokkien, which can reach up to 30 cm in length and weigh half a kg each.

Angling Thrills – Tanjung Agas

Lots of fish in the river, a roof to shelter them from the searing sun and restaurants nearby… it’s an angler’s dream come true, writes John Tiong.

Tanjung Agas jetty, 25km south of Port Dickson, has become a favourite angling spot for many locals. The jetty is over Sungai Timun where it joins the Straits of Malacca and the water is teeming with both fresh water and salt water fishes.

Tasik Bera (Bera Lake) – Malaysia’s First Ramsar Site

Temerloh, Nov 4 (Bernama) – Tasik Bera consists of seven flooded river valleys that collectively form a riverine lake system measuring 35 km by 20 km and covering an area of 6,150 hectares. It is the largest natural freshwater body in Malaysia.

Tasik Bera is of great importance not only because of the rich biodiversity but also from a scientific, recreational, educational and economic point of view. This alluvial peat swamp supports a biological community that is unique to Malaysia. (more…)
