Oh Joy, The Kayaker!

“Adrenalin coursed through me as I paddled stealthily to the spot. Closer, I realised they were juvenile tomans. Their parents were no longer looking after them. If they were small fries instead, I at least had the chance to catch a good-size toman for the home freezer.” Arnold Js Loh, A Kayak Fisher

Out of boredom I cast at them. As usual, all 200 over of juvenile tomans tried to eat the lure at once, resulting in a boiling frenzy. One of them inevitably caught the treble hook. I reeled the lure back to free the fish.

Not bad. Over 11 inches long. I sampled fried juvenile toman nearly 10 years ago, out of curiosity

Tronoh Mines Revisited

“The fishing was so good the first time, we decided to revisit this ex-mining lake in Tronoh which we named The Mayan City or simply, T1 . Tronoh, like most ex-mining towns in Malaysia are pockmarked with ex-mining lakes. T1 is one of the largest lakes in the area…each of us has caught so many mayans that we had lost count.” Gerald K, A Kayak Fisher

Kayak & Canoe – A Brief History

“…the indigenous seafaring Austronesian groups rigged their canoes with one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers, which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull. The outrigger gives greater stability and seaworthiness upon a canoe, enabling the seafarers to cross vast oceans.” Gerald K

Kayak Fishing – A Growing Fishing Sport

“This is where the kayaks have an extreme advantage. They can fish areas that are untouched by other anglers. Back country mud flats, oyster rakes, and salt marshes are all accessible and fishable in a kayak.” Ron Brooks

Eco-boating: The Ecology and Economy of Boating

“Boating does not have to be complicated or expensive. It is possible to go boating with a sense of proportion that fits small families, singles, or retirees on a budget.” Katie McPhail

The Hidden Treasures of Empangan Batu

Empangan Batu – Saturday, 3rd April 2010 (by Gerald K).  During my recent trip to Empangan Batu, I have encountered small groups of palm-sized fish while paddling along Sungai Pamah. I learned later from a local that they were Mata Merah (means red-eyed) and I started to google for more information about them. (more…)

Empangan Batu – A Perfect Getaway for Kayakers

March 23, 2010 – Empangan Batu, Selangor (by Gerald K).  Empangan Batu or Batu Dam is just a 20-minute drive from where I lived. It is one of four (Semenyih, Klang Gate, Batu and Pangsun) large dams within a short drive from KL. Only the Batu and Semenyih dams are accessible by road. If you need a quick getaway from the urban jungle, these dams are the closest to Nature you can get. Peaceful, beautiful and therapeutic…a perfect getaway for kayak anglers. (more…)

Lurking Below

December 12, 2009 – Air Kuning, Perak (thestar online).  Nobody knows for sure how the Peacock Bass got here, but most fisher folk would concede that it has become a permanent resident. The Peacock Bass is a South American freshwater predator. To win a piscatorial argument, though, one needs to acknowledge that it is not actually a bass but a member of the cichlid family, much like the ubiquitous Tilapia.

The Hunt for Peacock Bass

November 24, 2009 – Air Kuning, Kampar (by Gerald K).  Most avid freshwater anglers would have heard of Air Kuning but few have had the opportunity to venture and fish in these lakes. It is a well known fact that large specimen size Peacock Bass are to be found here. If you look at the size of the Air Kuning wetlands system, it is not difficult to believe that there are some monster-size PBs (and even tomans) lurking in some corners.

Good or bad, Air Kuning is not easily accessible by road. Yes, you need a 4WD to access some of these lakes.  But, that’s not all. You need a boat too, if you want to explore the many hotspots around the lakes and the river system. Air Kuning is definitely an ideal place for kayak anglers. (more…)

Kayak Fishing & Earth Hour @ Batu Dam

[ April 3, 2010; 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. ] Our lakes, rivers and dams aren’t exactly clean. I can see rubbish left behind by irresponsible anglers, picnickers and campers each time I go paddling. As a personal campaign, I have decided I would spare an Earth Hour to remove the rubbish each time I go paddling at these places. I hope you would do the same. All you need are garbage bags [...]

Romancing The Canoe

“Many people are fascinated just by watching flyfishing experts cast their lines…the movement is simply so graceful. The same can be said for canoeing. Watch the video below and see how the canoeist “waltzes” with his canoe.” Gerald K
